EN:  The Visual Core

My painting is born from classical drawing and establishes itself through the contrast between the fluid atmosphere of spray paint and the precision of curves executed entirely freehand. The process begins on Canson paper with India ink, transitions through digital color studies on the computer, and comes to life on the canvas. I use spray paint in the background to dictate the temperature and emotional weight of each setting. Upon this foundation, the geometry of exponential functions emerges in a purely organic manner through pencil sketches, where lines undulate according to the object, place, or living beings I imagine in their beauty. These curves inspire movements that we cannot guide or tame; within them, the future disdains the past, making that specific present moment unique. The pleasure of brushing acrylic paint over these forms is guided by manual gesture and the raw power of the pigment, allowing the intensity of the paint to dictate the final path of the colors.

Material Engineering

This pursuit of the unique moment is not limited to the surface of the painting; it extends to the physical construction of the artwork, where I apply my professional background in scenography to design high-durability structures. I build each canvas from scratch: structuring the stretcher bars from Cedrinho (cedar) wood and manually tensioning the semi-linen fabric with high-fixation Rapid staples. To ensure long-term archival longevity, I perform an imprimatura with magnesium to neutralize the pH of the semi-linen, followed by two coats of acrylic gesso. The background gains atmosphere with Colorgin Arts acrylic spray, over which I use flat and round brushes to apply Acrylic Colors acrylic paint, giving body to the curves. After the signature and the application of matte varnish, the back receives an industrial hanging system with two eye hooks and wire cable locked with stainless steel crimping sleeves. The safeguarding of the collector's wall is achieved through protectors combining 3M silicone tape, 3mm E.V.A., and soft fabric—including three extra protection units. The technical record of authorship and specifications is calligraphed with black Posca marker inside the frame, accompanied by a Canson paper label structurally framed in Paraná paper. Each stage is a preservation engineering decision to ensure the integrity of the painting remains intact for generations.

The Closing Concept

Bringing one of these paintings into an environment means integrating the study of existing forms and themes that appear deconstructed into unconventional formats. My mission as an artist and scenographer is to transform the visual mass of familiar elements, expanding them through space and inviting the viewer to see the world from a new perspective. Rather than just delivering a composition of colors and curves, I offer a window into the beauty I imagine, sustained by an impeccable engineering that protects this vision against the passage of time. Each canvas anchors within the room the striking presence of a present instant that challenges the gaze and renews itself every day.

MANIFESTO CONCEITUAL - RODRIGO BARCENA MENDES
